Siaogangshan Skywalk Park

Siaogangshan, located between Gangshan and Yanchao districts, covers 1.8 hectares of land.

Siaogangshan Skywalk Park features an 88m-high skywalk inspired by music. The cable-stayed bridge looks like a violin. Its steel cables symbolize violin strings, while the spiral staircases at the end represent a harmonica which seems to respond to the violin in a song.

Shoushan Zoo

Shoushan Zoo

Located on Shou Mountain, Shoushan Zoo is the largest public zoo in southern Taiwan. Established in 1978 but relocated in 1986, it is surrounded on three sides by mountains. The zoo is made up of various areas including small animals, mammals, predators, a bird park, a reptile center, and a nocturnal animal center. There is also an education center in the zoo where stuffed animals and information are displayed. The entrance also features Taiwan’s largest wall mosaic and the walkway features paintings from various schools.

Shoushan Lovers' Viewing Platform

Beside Shoushan Martyrs Shrine, 32 different love declaration plaques decorate a platform, symbolizing the fact that love transcends national borders. There is also a piece of love-themed installation art, “Love Megaphone” and three statues of macaques to symbolize the three different stages of love: pursuit, passion, and union. Look down and you will see breathtaking mountain and sea scenery and enchanting night scenery. Lovers’ Viewing Platform has become one of Kaohsiung’s most iconic scenic spots.

Baolai Spring Park

Baolai Spring Park

Baolai is Kaohsiung’s most famous hot spring town with spring waters up to 52 degrees Celsius. At pH 7.2 (slightly alkaline), the water is high-quality bicarbonate with no color, no odor, and feels mild. It softens one’s skin, making the skin silky. People call it a “beautifying hot spring.” The park covers 5.4 hectares of land, with 1,370 flowering arbor trees. It looks like a colorful sea of flowers all year round.

With the ocean on all four sides, Cijin has an abundance of seafood, with plenty of restaurants serving up fresh-from-the-sea cuisine. Many of the eateries are clustered along Miaoqian Street by Cijin Ferry Pier as well as at the beach area. As you drive from Cijin Road to the Cross-Harbor Tunnel, you will see many seafood restaurant owners vying for your business.

Located on the second floor of Cijin Seaside Park Tourist Service Center, Cijin Shell Gallery has the largest shellfish collection in Taiwan. It contains specimens of over 2,000 kinds of shellfish and around 200 kinds of crab, and five major clams and shells, as well as all kinds of precious shells. The jewel of the museum’s collection is the world’s largest bivalve mollusc (Liogryphaea arcuate).

Foguangshan Buddha Memorial Centre

Since its opening in 2011, Foguangshan Buddha Memorial Center (BMC) has received several accolades including the 2014 Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor as the top ranking attraction in Kaohsiung.

BMC is a 100-hectare complex built to enshrine the Buddha’s tooth relic now housed in the Main Hall. The big Buddha statue atop the building behind the Main Hall is the BMC’s landmark. Within the compound, there are art galleries, a theater, a children’s gallery, and souvenir stores. In addition, visitors can get to experience Tea Chan, sutra transcription, or join in festive celebrations at the Five Harmonies Pagoda.

Love River

Love River is undoubtedly the most famous of Kaohsiung’s tourist attractions. Neatly paved riverside pathways attract not only visitors but also couples who want to take wedding photos. The Love Boat and newly introduced Gondola are both great ways to admire scenic river views.

The Butterfly Park is situated on the eastern side of the Jinshi (Golden Lion) Lake Scenic Park. Its flowers, plants, and ponds attract wild butterflies, and its two large exhibition halls are filled with nectar-producing plants that butterflies adore. Murmuring streams flow past small bridges, and visitors can follow the wooden walkway into a secret wonderland where butterflies dance, and where they can see up close pupae becoming butterflies.

Sizihwan Bay is known for its beautiful sunset and its natural reefs. The area includes scenic spots like Sizihwan Beach, the Seaside Park, and the former British Consulate at Takao. You can enjoy views over the sea and the port. The inscription on the gate of Shaochuan Artillery Position, a national heritage site, reads “Kaohsiung Town North Gate.” It was built at the same time as Cihou Fort, to cover different fields of fire. Today, the cannons are gone, and only three gun emplacements remain to intrigue the people of the future.

Lianchitan (Lotus Pond) Scenic Area

Lianchitan (Lotus Pond) Scenic Area is one of Kaohsiung’s most traditional scenic areas, and was listed as one of the “Eight Sights of Fongshan” in the Qing Dynasty. There are pavilions by the lakeside, massive statues of gods, and the “old city” surrounded by the city wall. In the former military dependents’ villages and traditional markets you can also sample Zuoying’s rich, diverse food. The seven-story Dragon and Tiger Pagoda is the most famous sight. Its walls are decorated with koji pottery and depict proselytizing stories. The pagoda is connected to the lakeside by Nine-Turn Bridge. Visitors should enter at the dragon’s mouth and exit from the tiger’s mouth to avoid bad luck and enjoy good fortune.

Meinong Lake

Meinong Lake

Located in Meinong District, Meinong Lake covers an area of 21 hectares. It is Kaohsiung’s second-largest artificial lake, smaller only than Chengcing Lake. Hills lie to the west, and the lake is surrounded by fields on three sides. Between October and March, large numbers of migratory birds come here to winter, making this an excellent place for birdwatching. A bike trail runs alongside the lake, and tourists love to come here to cycle, walk, fish, or enjoy the splendid scenery.

This century-old street, in which history and culture gather, and where baroque facades and redbrick structures mingle with sandstone, has an elegant classical atmosphere. Cishan (Qishan) was once a distribution point for bananas and sugarcane. When you visit the history-steeped Old Street Commercial District, the area’s famous traditional snacks, banana sweets and iced treats are sure to engage your attention as much as the old architecture.
